Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs T. Quick meets with the UK Minister of State at the Department for Exiting the European Union, M. Callanan

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Terens Quick, today met with the UK Minister of State at the Department for Exiting the European Union (DExEU), M. Callanan.

Lord Callanan referred to the course of the Brexit negotiations ahead of the European Council meeting this coming December, as well as to issues of bilateral interest that are impacted by the relevant procedures. He also expressed his view on the necessity to accelerate the resolution of pending issues, so that the negotiations won’t come to an impasse and unilateral actions. He also put particular emphasis on the proposal the British side has submitted regarding the future protection of the rights of EU member-state citizens in the United Kingdom following the Brexit.

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed to Lord Callanan that Greece stands with the European Union in these negotiations, notwithstanding its special interest in the status of Greeks residing in the United Kingdom –including the preservation of the rights and tuition-and-board costs of Greeks studying in the UK– as well as of Greek businesses, a significant portion of which are active in the shipping sector. He underscored, once again, that the negotiations are being carried out by the EU, with Brussels at the core, and that Greece is following the progress of the talks with great interest.
