Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos met today, 5 November, with former Governor General of Canada Michaëlle Jean.
Mr. Venizelos and Ms. Jean referred to the strong ties between Greece and Canada, and the need to further strengthen political contacts and bilateral cooperation. They also underscored the importance of expanding bilateral cultural and academic exchanges, as well as cooperation within UNESCO and the International Organisation of La Francophonie.
Also discussed were the challenges being faced by multicultural societies and the importance of dialogue between different cultural groups. Michaëlle Jean herself is an example of the successful functioning of a multicultural society, as, coming from a family of political refugees from Haiti, she served as Governor General, the highest office in Canada.
