Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Venizelos’ response to a journalist’s question on the results of yesterday’s meeting of the Eurogroup

On the margins of the Prime Minister’s visit to Nicosia, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos stated the following in response to a journalist’s question on the results of yesterday’s meeting of the Eurogroup:

“Yesterday’s meeting of the Eurogroup fell fully within our planning. We have a fully comprehensive plan and we are taking all of the steps to ensure that, by the end of the year, the agreement with our partners will have been completed and Greece will have turned a new page, exiting the status of the memorandum and the troika, and returning to a status of substantial equality within the Eurozone. But we will do this with the support of the existing, regular mechanisms of the European Union, rather than emergency mechanisms like the troika. There is nothing better, there is nothing safer.

Unfortunately, there are those who, for micro-political reasons, are undermining the national front. And in reality they want to return the county to a status of dependency, memorandum and troika. Unless they want to say that if we achieve this agreement, they will renounce it in order to offer the Greek people something they can neither describe nor guarantee. The citizens will judge. We call on them to help, to rally round, to consent so that we can achieve the best for the country.”
