Below is Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos’ statement regarding the death of Palestinian Authority Minister Ziad Abu Ein:
“We are deeply grieved at the death of Palestinian Minister Ziad Abu Ein during a peaceful demonstration and tree planting at the West Bank village of Turmussaya, on the occasion of events marking International Human Rights Day. We express our condolences to his loved ones, to the Palestinian Authority and to the Palestinian people for their unwarranted loss.
We are certain that the Israeli authorities will carry out an immediate, transparent and credible investigation into the conditions under which Ziad Abu Ein’s death came about.
Finally, we call on all sides, under the current tense conditions, to show self-restraint and responsibility, and to intensify their efforts to avoid further escalation of the tension.”
