Foreign Ministry spokesperson’s response to a journalist’s question regarding the European Commission Progress Report on Albania

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Konstantinos Koutras made the following statement in response to a journalist’s question on the European Commission Progress Report on Albania:

“The European Commission Progress Report on Albania gives a positive assessment of the reform efforts in specific key areas, ahead of the upcoming decision of the Council of the EU on the granting of candidate-country status to Albania.

Greece came out in favor of granting candidate-country status to Albania in December 2013, when the issue was discussed for the first time at the Council. Greece continues to believe that Albania has produced significant tangible results and shown the political will to promote specific, substantial reforms in the context of its European course.

As the Presidency of the Council, Greece will endeavor to achieve consensus among the EU member states on the granting of candidate-country status to Albania, within the framework of our institutional role.”
