Hosting of events at diplomatic and consular authorities to celebrate the International Greek Language Day (09.02.2024)

Over 70 diplomatic and consular authorities of Greece abroad have planned and are carrying out more than 100 actions to celebrate today's International Greek Language Day.

The events are taking place on the initiative of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Kotsiras, and the Central Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Kotsiras commended our Diplomatic Authorities for their response and emphasized: “Promoting the Greek language and culture is one of our key strategic objectives. In this regard, events are held by our Embassies and Consulates abroad to celebrate the International Greek Language Day. Our coordinated actions and initiatives to strengthen Greek language learning and promote the universal dimension of our language and culture will continue”.

Lectures, student competitions, recitations of Greek poetry, the awarding of certificates of Greek language competence, film screenings, theatrical and musical performances, presentations of Greek literary works, conferences, and photography exhibitions are just a few of the events that have already taken place or are scheduled to be held in the near future. Many of these events have been organized in collaboration with Chairs of Hellenic Studies at major Universities across the world, Greek Language Departments, Greek language schools, Greek communities as well as Cultural Centers.

Utilizing modern technology and aiming at the greatest possible dissemination of information, a significant number of actions were carried out online and focused on the use of digital media and tools, including interactive Greek language games for children, posts of Greek words and competitions on the Authorities' social media, video messages and tributes.

This year, as in previous years, the International Greek Language Day highlights its universal character, while encouraging young people from the Diaspora, as well as foreign language users, to engage with our language and become valuable allies in its continued journey.
