“The Greek government does not accept the existence of grey areas in the Aegean.” Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis stressed this in a very clear manner in his Thursday evening interview on Action24 TV’s Evening Report with Giorgos Kouvaras.
“We have accepted nothing. And we will not accept this under any conditions,” he added. He also noted that our only dispute with Turkey concerns the continental shelf and that we do not recognise the existence of any other dispute. Mr. Varvitsiotis highlighted that the Greek government is committed to diplomacy, that it does not want to militarise the crisis, but that it is determined, if need be, to defend our national sovereignty in every way. He added, pointedly, that “we mustn't bite” when baited by Turkey’s provocative statements or Erdogan’s effort to sow division and doubt in the Greek side. “It is important,” he underscored, “to form and hold a national front against such challenges to our country.”
