Interview of Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis on ALPHA radio, with journalist Haris Digrintakis - main points (9 April 2020)

“We have to reach an agreement that all of Europe needs. Otherwise we’ll fail to meet a major bet,” Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis stressed in an interview on ALPHA radio, with journalist Haris Digrintakis.

Regarding today’s Eurogroup meeting, Mr. Varvitsiotis also emphasised that there needs to be a shield against the financial pressure the EU member states will come under following the crisis. “There has to be a single voice for jumpstarting the economy and that the next day will find us united against the COVID-19 crisis,” he added. He said he was optimistic that this could happen, because otherwise the very foundations of the EU would be shaken.

Regarding the impact of the crisis on tourism, the Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted that the priority right now is to open up the country – and what environment this will happen in. Referring to talks he had with the President of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE), Yannis Retsos, regarding the problems the Tourism sector is facing, he stressed that coordination on the European level is vital to opening the markets.
