“The European Council decision recognizes the delimitation of maritime zones as the only dispute between Greece and Turkey. And that is the only topic for discussion in the exploratory talks.” Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis stressed this, among other things, in his interview with Open TV’s Fay Mavragani.
More specifically, referring to the conclusions of the latest meeting of the European Council regarding Turkey, Mr. Varvitsiotis underscored the fact that, for the first time, reference was made to the issue of Varosha in Famagusta, adding that Ankara’s recent actions opening Varosha violate this agreement. He also highlighted that there is no rift in the Greece-Cyprus front.
Finally, the Alternate Minister commented on the matter of the EU sanctions on Turkey, arguing that the sanctions must be used as a means of exerting pressure – rather than inflicting punishment – so that Turkey stops its unilateral provocations.
