Interview of Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis on Parapolitika 90.1 radio - main points (13 January 2021)

M. VARVITSIOTIS: We do not negotiate matters of national sovereignty.

“Greece does not negotiate its right to defend its national territory” was the message Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis sent in his interview today on Parapolitika 90.1 radio with journalist Panagiotis Tzenos.

Specifically, he stressed that “we do not negotiate the self-evident. There is no issue of demilitarisation of the islands – it is not up for negotiation.” Regarding the upcoming exploratory talks, Mr. Varvitsiotis underscored that the exercise of national rights is not up for negotiation and that “Greece remains firm in its national position that there is only one dispute with Turkey: The delimitation of maritime zones.”

He also added that “the topic of the exploratory talks will be the extent to which we can agree to resolve our dispute through a joint decision to have recourse to the International Court.”
