Interview of Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis on Rai 2 TV - main points (Athens, 5 August 2020)

“The challenge for our country is to change the economic growth model and manage the assistance we’re going to receive from the European Recovery Fund.”

Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis stressed this, among other things, in his interview today on Italy’s Rai 2 TV with journalist Anna Mazzone, commenting on the result of and Greece’s success in the negotiations at the recent European Council meeting, in Brussels, on the Recovery Fund and the new European budget.

More specifically, Mr. Varvitsiotis highlighted that, in recent years, Greece has invested in tourism, a sector that has proven extremely vulnerable to the pandemic. “What we did to manage this package was to create a council of experts, headed by the Nobel economist Christopher Pissarides,” he added.

Regarding the negotiations at the Summit Meeting, the Alternate Minister commented that “our country – with ten years of experience of what the memorandum accompanying the European Stability Mechanism means – said, ‘no more Troika.’”
