In an interview on Real FM, with journalist Nikos Chatzinikolaou, Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis stressed that responding to the coronavirus requires grants rather than loans from the EU.
Mr. Varvitsiotis noted that the creation of a Recovery Fund for the European Economy is on the agenda for today’s meeting of the European Council. He also highlighted that there appears to be agreement among the member states on increasing the EU budget, with front-loaded funding for the first years, and that in this context, the European leaders are today expected to issue a mandate to the European Commission to determine the framework.
Regarding Turkey’s ongoing provocations in the Aegean and the Mediterranean, the Alternate Minister underscored that of late, in addition to responding to the health crisis, Greece has dealt successfully with multiple crises, including the recent situation in Evros.
