The Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, was interviewed by telephone on Skai Radio, by journalists Dimitris Oikonomou and Eva Antonopoulou.
Among other things, he stated that Greece expects a clear message of support from the European Council – a clear stance on the illegal agreement between Turkey and Libya.
Mr. Varvitsiotis said that a united and clear European voice raises the bar for the Turkish side, which will think twice about what it does from here on in, stressing that Turkey’s strategic interests are not served by a further escalation of tensions in its relations with the EU and its member states.
Finally, he expressed the will to keep the issue of the Turkey-Libya agreement on the diplomatic level, so that the diplomatic clash does not turn military, though this does not mean that Greece is not prepared to defend its sovereign rights in any way necessary.
