Interview of Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis on SKAI TV, with journalist Dimitris Economou - main points (28 May 2020)

In his interview on SKAI TV’s ‘Simera’, with journalist Dimitris Economou, Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis welcomed as ambitious and courageous the European Commission’s proposed €750 billion recovery fund for the European economy and a €33.4 billion support package for the Greek economy’s response to the repercussions of the pandemic crisis. He underscored that the total funding for Greece, together with the funding from the European budget, will exceed €50 billion for the next seven years, stressing that “we worked hard and together with the prime minister we 'll continue to fight in the negotiations to optimise our country’s gains. Through the European Commission’s proposal for a €750 billion recovery fund for the European economy, Europe is coming out stronger and more united.”

He also said that the funds in question will be in addition to the approximately €20 billion in the new European budget that our country is negotiating. Finally, he clarified that the bulk of the funding will go for grants and NSRF programmes, and that there are no memorandum-style obligations deriving from funding in the form of loans.
