Interview of Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis on THEMA RADIO, with journalist Giannis Pretenteris - main points (16 June 2020)

In his interview on THEMA RADIO with journalist Giannis Pretenteris, Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis referred to the negotiations on the Recovery Fund and the new MFF, which start today in the EU General Affairs Council, in which the Alternate Minister participates. “The negotiations on the political level essentially begin today,” he noted, a few hours before the Council meeting, and on Friday the negotiations will continue on the level of heads of state, at the Summit Meeting.

More specifically, Mr. Varvitsiotis noted that the Greek side is fighting the line of the “frugal” states of Europe, so that financial assistance can be given mainly in the form of grants. With regard to Greece, he stressed that, in addition to the €32 billion from the Recovery Fund, our country is pursuing an additional €40 billion from the 2021-2027 European budget (MFF), via the NSRF and agricultural subsidies. “As I said, we are looking at doubling this money, which gives us an idea of the size of this package,” he said.

According to the Alternate Minister, Greece will have the opportunity to manage one of the largest support packages, and it is important, he emphasised, for this money to  be used correctly and be absorbed quickly.
