Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis’ statement upon his arrival at the EU Foreign Affairs Council (Brussels, 23.06.2025)

The extremely tense and complex situation in the wider Middle East is causing concern to the European Union and is seriously disrupting the global security architecture.

I would like to draw particular attention to the terrorist attack at the Mar Elias Greek Orthodox Church in Damascus, where worshipers lost their lives. This was a blind attack that highlights the intensity and asymmetry of the existing threats.

In this context, I have put forth a five-point plan to the Foreign Affairs Council, so that Europe can assert its presence.

This includes, firstly, a political solution, which will materialize through self-restraint and de-escalation. Secondly, the protection of all civilians and the freedom of navigation. Thirdly, the European Union's active involvement in the processes that are currently underway. Finally, we must not forget Gaza, since all issues are interlinked. We must step up our efforts to ensure the unhindered flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza and further strengthen the Palestinian Authority so that it can respond to the current challenges.

Issues related to the Middle East also include Syria and Libya, from which increased migration flows are being observed. It is also the responsibility of the European Union to control these irregular migration flows by any means. Finally, full respect for International Law, and in particular the International Law of the Sea, must be ensured.
