Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement on the European perspective of the Western Balkans

Greece is a long-standing supporter of the European perspective of the countries of the Western Balkans. A perspective launched at the 2003 Thessaloniki EU summit and firmly supported by Greece as the path to consolidating regional stability and security.

This position, as Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed at yesterday’s meeting of the European Council, in Brussels, remains one of the key constants of Greek foreign policy.

Greece will continue to support the efforts made by the countries of the region to meet the requirements for membership in our broader European family. To achieve this goal, we encourage these countries to remain committed to the path of reforms, which can have only a positive effect on their approach to the European Union and on the lives of their citizens. At the same time, we call on the EU member states to work together to realise the European perspective of the Western Balkans, for the benefit of the region and Europe itself.
