Statement of the Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, on the margins of the information meeting on the 4th EU-Arab World Summit (15 July 2019)

The informative working meeting held in preparation for the 4th EU-Arab World Summit, which is to take place in October in Athens, was carried out with the highly symbolic attendance of Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis. In his remarks, the Alternate Minister raised the critical issue of strengthening the EU’s ties with the Arab world, in tandem with deepening of the dialogue between the two sides. He also stated that it was a key priority of the new government for Greece to emerge as a political and business centre facilitating investments.

In closing, Mr. Varvitsiotis made the following statement:

“The EU-Arab World summit makes Greece a bridge between two different worlds that must live together, work together, discover each other and, above all – through dialogue – find ways to communicate with one another. For us, the Arab world is a space of the highest political and economic importance, and we are pursuing its stability.

This stability will come only through close cooperation with Europe. I think this political dialogue, which is taking place for the fourth time in Athens, is an important step towards our gaining a better understanding of what the Arab world wants from Europe. In closing, I would like to say that the challenges of the migration issue, climate change and, above all, the challenge of exchanging and deepening investments are something we will be addressing this year, again, and in the years to come.”
