Statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, following his visit to Libya and Egypt (Cairo, 22 December 2019)

Today I had the pleasure of visiting Benghazi and meeting with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), with whom we discussed broader issues and the issues of the two memoranda the government in Tripoli signed with Turkey.

I was very pleased to hear his positions, which coincide with ours on this matter. In other words, that the memoranda in question are totally null and void, and how damaging they are for the Libyan people and society, and of course for stability in the region.

Immediately afterwards I came here, to Cairo, where I saw my friend the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shoukry, with whom I discussed the results of my morning meeting in Libya. I also briefed him in general on my meetings in the Gulf last week, with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and then with Jordan. I would also like to say that, during my stay in Libya, I communicated with the President of the Libyan House of Representatives, Aguilah Saleh Eissa, who visited us recently in Athens.
