Statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, following the meeting of the President of the Hellenic Parliament, K. Tassoulas, with his Libyan counterpart, Aguila Saleh Eissa (Athens, 12 December 2019)

“First of all, I would like to thank the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Mr. Tassoulas, for inviting me to be here today.

And I would also like to thank the Chair of the Greek-Libyan Friendship Committee of the Hellenic Parliament, Angelos Syrigos, for being here.

But mainly, on behalf of the Greek government and its Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, I want to thank Aguila Saleh, the President of the Libyan House of Representatives, for visiting Athens and the Hellenic Parliament and for the detailed briefing.

I welcome his position, the position of the Libyan House of Representatives, according to which the memoranda signed by Turkey and the Government of National Accord in Tripoli are null and void, cannot be applied and expose the region to instability. They threaten peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.

I also want to say that the Greek government supports the efforts of Mr. Salamé, and we said this to the President of the House of Representatives, also expressing the Greek government’s readiness to help in the direction of bringing peace and implementing International Law in Libya.

Mr. President, Mr. Tassoulas, thank you very much.”
