Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis holds videoconference with the Irish Minister of State for European Affairs, Thomas Byrne (27 January 2021)

The Greek proposal for the adoption of a common European vaccination certificate, European coordination against the Covid-19 pandemic, and the response to the financial repercussions of Brexit were the focus of the videoconference that the Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, had today with the Irish Minister of State for European Affairs, Thomas Byrne.

Mr. Varvitsiotis stressed that the goal of the Greek initiative for the adoption of a common European vaccination certificate is not the establishment of a medical passport. He underscored that a common European certificate would provide direct data on vaccination, in a uniform manner, also facilitating travel in the future. He also pointed to the need to hasten approval of possible vaccinations against COVID-19, a position expressed by the Greek Prime Minister during the European Council’s latest videoconference.

Referring to the economic dimension of the pandemic, Mr. Varvitsiotis highlighted the Recovery and Resilience Plan that Greece drew up in a timely manner, stressing the need for a speedy response to the economic repercussions of the pandemic.

Mr. Byrne thanked Greece for its solidarity with Ireland throughout the Brexit process.
