In an interview on Parapolitika Radio, with journalists Andreas Papadopoulos and Kostas Papachlimintzos, Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis pointed to the excellent level of Greek-American relations.
At the same time, he criticized Syriza’s stance on the Prime Minister’s visit to the U.S., stressing that the expressions used by the main opposition party have as sole purpose petty political gains and undermine the climate of national unity. “In his meeting with the Prime Minister, I expect Alexis Tsipras to take a more serious and responsible stance than the one taken by his representatives throughout the previous time. And I think the line taken in the budget debate – that on national issues, and in particular on the matter of Turkish provocations, the Greeks are united – should be continued here,” he noted.
Commenting on the Soleimani issue, the Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs underscored that no EU country came out against this decision or is criticizing the United States. “The majority of Union countries stood by the United States. Don’t forget that Soleimani wasn’t just an Iranian General. He was 15th on the European Union’s list of terrorists. So I think the idea that we should come out -- as Syriza’s party youth would have us do -- and condemn the murder of Soleimani, which no country has done, verges on madness,” he noted.
