Announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the appointment of María Angela Holguín Cuéllar as the new Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General on Cyprus (07.01.2024)

The Greek Government warmly welcomes the announcement by the United Nations Secretary-General regarding the appointment of Ms. María Angela Holguín Cuéllar as the new Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus.

This is a significant step in the ongoing efforts, under the guidance of the UN Secretary-General, to resume negotiations aimed at achieving a mutually acceptable, just, and viable solution to the Cyprus issue, in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions, as well as the principles and values of the European Union.

We hope that the newly-appointed UN Envoy will successfully coordinate the effort to find common ground for the resumption of negotiations within this framework.
Greece, in close cooperation and coordination with the Republic of Cyprus and its President, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, will continue to fully support the United Nations Secretary-General’s efforts in this regard.
