In his interview on ERT1’s evening news, with journalist Ioannis Darras, Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis talked about the procedures for the repatriation of Greeks who are stranded abroad.
According to the Alternate Minister, following coordinated actions on the part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, over 1,000 of Greek citizens have already been repatriated, while those who are stranded in non-EU countries are asked to contact the local Greek embassies. Mr. Varvitsiotis stressed that “the Foreign Ministry’s Crisis Management Unit is collaborating with the embassies, with the other European countries and with the airline companies, in order to bring home those who are stranded abroad.” He also called on Greeks in EU countries where there are commercial flights “not to wait” and, should they want to, to buy a ticket and come home immediately.
The Alternate Minister reiterated the urgent need for those who return to self-isolate themselves for 14 days. “They are not to go and see parents and friends,” he emphasised.
Finally, he said that there are 280 Greek citizens in Cyprus who want to return home. “They are in daily contact with the Greek embassy and, in spite of the reduced number of flights, we believe they will be repatriated in the coming days,” he added.
