Meetings of Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias in Libya, Egypt and Cyprus (22 December 2019)

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias travelled to Benghazi, Libya, this morning to meet with the head of the Libyan National Army, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.

Greece’s Special Envoy for Libya, Ambassador C. Lazaris, also participated in the meeting.

The meeting took place as a follow-up to the visit of the President of the Libyan House of Representatives, Aguilah Saleh Eissa, to Athens on 12 December, and following relevant communication between Mr. Dendias and Mr. Eissa.

The talks focused on the situation in Libya and the prospects for resolving the crisis.

Mr. Dendias raised the issue of the two groundless agreements signed by Turkey and the government in Tripoli, setting out Greece’s positions and pointing to the fact that the content of the texts in question is in total breach of International Law and the Law of the Sea.

Furthermore, he stressed the need for a political solution to the Libyan crisis in the context of the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, Ghassan Salamé, and the scheduled meeting in Berlin.

Greece looks forward to an inclusive process that will meet the expectations of the Libyan people as a whole.

Subsequently, the Minister of Foreign Affairs travelled to Cairo, where he is meeting with his counterpart Sameh Shoukry, and immediately afterwards he will meet with the Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Christodoulides, in Larnaca.
