Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis' statement to ERT TV and Greek correspondents following his meeting with the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres (New York, 25.02.2025)

This is a significant moment for Greece, as this is our first presence at the UN Security Council as an elected member, at a particularly critical juncture for the whole of humanity.

Yesterday we had the opportunity to discuss issues concerning Ukraine, within the framework of the UN General Assembly and the Security Council.

Greece, as always, maintained its principled stance. We are seeking a solution founded on international law, respecting the territorial integrity of Ukraine. For this reason, our stance, along with the rest of the Europeans, was oriented in this direction.

Today, at the UN Security Council, we had the opportunity to discuss about the developments in the Middle East. The expectations raised by the ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon. The next steps to be taken, in particular the strict implementation of the ceasefire agreement and the transition to the second phase for the release of all hostages. This is necessary, in order for us to start working for the next day, which will lead to the reconstruction of Gaza, the return of people to their homes, as well as a political solution with the creation of a Palestinian state.

On the occasion of my visit to New York, I met with the UN Secretary-General. We had an extensive discussion among others, on the Cyprus issue and the upcoming expanded meeting in the near future. We discussed issues related to the organizational and structural aspects of the United Nations, especially in light of Greece's upcoming Presidency of the Security Council in May, with a focus on a series of events that will be organized by the Greek Presidency. We also addressed the major developments in the world, in Ukraine and in the Middle East, but also in all war-torn parts of the world, where the United Nations can provide substantial services.

Greece is at the center of international multilateralism and diplomacy with a strong footprint, and above all guided by its principles.

Greece is the country that supports international law. It is the country that engages in dialogue with everyone. It is the bridge between the East and the West, the North and the South. And we will remain at the forefront of international developments to offer our services and to strengthen our country's footprint.
