The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the unanimous adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2723/2024, which renews the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for one year.
In its Resolution, the Security Council welcomes the recent appointment of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, Ms. Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, with the aim of resuming negotiations to resolve the Cyprus issue on the basis of a Bi-zonal, Bi-communal Federation, thus reaffirming the framework of the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Greece welcomes the references made by the Security Council, which once again condemns the unilateral actions of the occupying forces in Varosha and the Buffer Zone, with a particular reference to Pyla, calling for the immediate reversal of the fait accomplis, abstention from further unilateral actions, and the implementation of the agreed-upon terms.
The renewal of UNFICYP’s mandate and the appointment of the Personal Envoy of the UNSG will contribute to the efforts aimed at finding a viable and just solution to the Cyprus issue.
