Tour of Komotini and Kavala by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kostas Fragogiannis, and the Assistant Secretary of State of the United States for Energy Resources, Francis Fannon (29 September 2020)

At the initiative of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Economic Diplomacy and Openness, Kostas Fragogiannis, the Deputy Minister and the Assistant Secretary of State of the United States for Energy Resources, Francis Fannon, toured Komotini and Kavala today, Tuesday, 29 September.

In Komotini, the two officials visited the worksite of Interconnector Greece – Bulgaria (IGB), the Natural Gas Pipeline that will connect Greece and Bulgaria. After being briefed by executives of the AVAX company tasked with its implementation, they observed the installation of part of the pipeline in the project trench.

During the briefing, company executives noted that despite the delays imposed by the pandemic quarantine, the project for the transport of gas from Komotini to Stara Zagora is proceeding rapidly with no great divergence from the initial schedule.

The Deputy Minister and the Assistant Secretary of State then returned to Kavala, where they visited the facilities of ENERGEAN and were briefed on the company's plans to construct underground natural gas storage facilities in the region. The company, which holds licences for the exploitation of deposits in Prinos and South Kavala, submitted a proposal to convert the almost exhausted deposit into an underground natural gas storage facility, which was included in the energy Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) of the European Union, and is now participating in the relevant Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) tender procedure for the expression of interests, which is ongoing and expires on 19 October 2020. This natural storage facility could store up to 1 billion cubic metres of natural gas.
