Written statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, following the 4th Brussels Conference on Syria (30 June 2020)

At today’s fourth Brussels Conference on Syria, in which I participated via videoconference, we examined the current situation in the country and the region, and we discussed the provision of additional support.

The ongoing war has caused great suffering to the Syrian people, uprooting thousands of people from their homes.

A large portion of the country's infrastructure has been destroyed, and restoration will require the international community’s coordinated efforts as well as significant funding. Full implementation of the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions, a Syrian-owned political solution without the involvement of third states, and ensuring the country’s unity, national sovereignty and territorial integrity continue to be of decisive importance for Syria and its population.

The ultimate goal of the international community’s efforts is the rebuilding of the country and the return of the refugees to their homes. To this end, I expressed Greece’s readiness to continue to contribute, to the extent of its capabilities, to this collective effort.

Finally, in response to Turkey’s references to our country, I recalled Turkey’s recent exploitation of human suffering in an attempt to blackmail the European Union.
