Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos had a number of useful political and diplomatic meetings yesterday, in Warsaw, on the margins of the official events marking the 25th anniversary of Polish Freedom Day, honoring the Solidarity Movement.
Mr. Venizelos had the opportunity to meet and talk briefly with U.S. President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry. He also had the opportunity to congratulate the newly elected President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, on behalf of Greece and the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Mr. Venizelos subsequently met with the head of the Holy See Secretariat of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolini, with the Presidents of Albania, Bujar Nishani, and Austria, Heinz Fischer, with Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arinç and Portuguese Deputy Prime Minister Paolo Portas, with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland, and with a number of Foreign Ministers.
The main topic of discussion during these meetings was the choice of persons to fill posts in the European institutions, and the recent developments in Ukraine, Syria, Libya and Egypt.
