Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis’ statement upon arrival at the EU General Affairs Council (Brussels, 25.01.2022)

“The future calls for us to shape a more coherent, more robust and stronger Europe”, stressed Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, upon arrival today at the EU General Affairs Council in Brussels, the first for 2022, focusing on the priorities of the French Presidency. “We believe in more Europe, we believe in a stronger Europe” he pointedly said.

In particular, Mr. Varvitsiotis noted that Greece supports the French priorities. "We, Greece, support the French priorities because they have to do with a Europe that is getting stronger, because, in these difficult times, we cannot afford a Europe that does not have a voice in major geopolitical issues. We cannot afford a Europe that shows instability by failing to guard its borders. We cannot have a Europe that does not show its teeth to those who question the rule of law, those who question the security situation in the Southeastern Mediterranean. We cannot have a Europe that is not able to ensure self-sufficiency of energy resources for its citizens. And of course, we cannot have a Europe that does not grow economically by properly utilizing the funds of the Recovery and Resilience Facility”, he said.

In his statements, the Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs also signalled the kind of Europe we want. “We believe in more Europe, we believe in a stronger Europe”, he said, while stressing: “This is the fight we are fighting to dispel any doubts about where we need to move in the future. The future calls for us to shape a more coherent, more robust and stronger Europe; a Europe that will embrace its 500 million citizens, a Europe that will fight the battle for the sake of generations to come”.
